Awhile back, I came across a small accumulation of the Marc Antony Legion coins. I noticed the Legion II coins had many different die pairs. Concentrating on only the reverses, I have so far come up with 43 different dies, using all available coins and pictures available. Does anyone know of anyone else who has done a die study on the Marc Antony Legion coins? Also, if anyone has a picture of a Leg II coin in their collection, I would like to see it. Thanks

I'm not aware of any research done on this type, it would be very interesting to see pictures of all the different dies.

I can't imagine that the British Museum does not have a data base illustrating known die varieties. I could be wrong but they are famous for being very meticulous over in "London town" ! Personally I have no Triumvirs in my collection or I would provide them. The closest thing I have is an AE As of Sextus Pompey.

These coins are on my want list so always happy to learn more about them, anything particularly worthwhile to look out for concerning die varieties?

I found a few Legion II for sale on Vcoins. You can send a note to the dealers to see if they will allow you to use their images. Just go to the Ancient Coin Dealer section and search using the word marc.

for each coin were many dies at the proportion 1 die for the obverse , 2 dies for the reverse .There are legion coins for about twenty legions .These coins were struck underway to pay the legions .So it looks me impossible to make an estimation of the dies and nobody has until now begun this enormous work . albert

I agree with Albert. I had no idea that this would be an enormous undertaking. The amount of die combinations depends on how long the dies last. If each pair of dies were to last 20,000 impressions, in theory, there may have been 100 dies used. Because of the reuse of silver coins, the amount of surviving examples may not represent any actual die combination possibilities. Whatever, this keeps me busy during the cold winter months.
