The value of a database of the coins being reported for removal is very significant. By quickly terminating the auctions - the coins are gone before any number of members even gets a look at them.

Wouldn't it be much more prudent to record pictures of each coin - both sides with seller name an local BEFORE reporting them? That way repeated use of the same photos can be tracked (a violation). Sharing of photos can also be tracked (another violation)

The biggest benefit to members would be a database they could consult with pictures of thousands of fakes.

I would not bother with the 1909-s VDB, 1914 D type which appear ad nauseum. I would include more of the non-rare coins that are not covered elsewhere.

By saving only the pictures of one coin or one side of one coin we are missing an opportunity.

I often do this for myself and have a big file but a central file makes more sense.

When I post a counterfeit, I try to include the seller name, item number, a photo, and sometimes why I think it is a fake.

If you post the item number we can still see the original images using this tool bobby created even after the listing is nuked. http://www.coincommunity.com/ebay_t...ge-image.asp

nss-52 Some do, some don't; often, it is one out of a group of dozens or more coins that will be terminated. More are missed than are captured.

dave700x The tool gives us more time - but a central file that could be searched by date country and denomination would likely be the best thing. A central location accessible to all members would be perfect.

A specific format for the file name would be best. Posts could be done by any interested member.

I developed a system for recording data associated with my book that might work. It was designed for a different purpose but a critical element was non-repeatable numbers.

Depending on file size limits - it could be broken down by Country or even by Country and denomination, but only if necessary. I see one file as superior.

Here is an example of name development:

Component 1. - Country Mexico MEX
Component 2. - Denomination 8 Reales 8R
Component 3. - Date 1882 1882
Component 4. - Mint Zacatecas Zs
Component 5. - Assayer IS IS
Component 6. - Type Numismatic Forgery NF
Component 7. - Number non-repeating # 001
Component 8. - Source myself RRG

The name of the file containing pictures - all of the above info - the posting person - the seller ID name and any other pertinent data would be:

MEX-8R-1882-Zs-IS-NF-001-RRG

This would allow for 999 photos of counterfeits of one date and type.

For fakes I keep a list of a minimum of four types.

CCC - Contemporary Circulating Counterfeits (legal demonetized)
NF - Numismatic Forgery including all frauds made for numismatic fraud
ALT - Altered Original Coins
REPL - Replicas - fantasies - souvenirs and other regardless of specific legality.

I would be interested in populating such a file. I would likely have a couple hours available each day to do this.

Dave700x I just tried the tool with a posting that was very recently removed - this evening - # 111917578386. The tool produces the "primary" image on the listing in this case just the obverse of a 1909 S VDB. Not actually enough data to make it useful for most counterfeits.

So we still face the time limitation between post - report and removal; that is a few hours at most to file possibly one hundred or more entries and there are numerous reports often made in batches.

I doubt ebay keeps these files anymore. They did at one time. It made enforcing several types of fraud rather easy. It could be done here but we would need a lot of volunteer effort and a method to distribute reports to prevent duplication. I believe it is possible to do about 12 per hour. Anyone interested could do it.

Would it be simpler if the person making the report did the listing first and if there are too many ask for help?

I just made two posts of two of my favorite numismatic forgeries from China. Both are re-sales by US id's that do not seem to be linked to the main distributor.

Atremor who posted the 1882 Zs JS 8R has over 500 listings but only 5 in coins and paper money. The 1882 was the only Chinese forgery.

Jlin21221 who posted the 1821 Zs RG 8 reales has 123 listings but only 1 coin - the Chinese forgery.

Including this post total time used was 22 minutes.
