Bought this a couple of weeks back at the Oshawa show from a very knowledgeable and honest dealer named Richard from Le30Sou coins. With only 17 known examples, this is IMO one of the hardest coins to acquire in the series. At VF20, this is the 5th highest example known. I think it may have made VF30 on a good day but due to the mark on the cheek, may have been downgraded. Not a perfect coin but it fits well in my set and I am very happy with my purchase.

Wow. That is really a nice example. It's especially nice as it has no hints of cleaning.
Congratulations.

We often have grading and variety discussions over beers. Richard's son also has a very sharp eye, and once cherry-picked this same coin in EF-45, which he then auctioned off here: http://www.icollector.com/1883H-Fiv...-4_i12524341

Matt it was a pleasure to be with you when you picked it up. The filling of a hole is a wonderful feeling. Now you will find the elusive 8/8/8 Lg8!

C and C site shows only 1883H, 600K mintage, no mention of different obverse styles for the year.
What obverse was intended for this mintage and was the obverse4 used from a previous year?
I can't find any info on this, tyia.

I was also impressed with his son and mentioned that to Richard. For such a young man, his knowledge and dedication are almost scary. I'm sure he will be a prominent fixture on the Canadian numismatic scene for many years. I only spoke to them for a short while but they left a very good impression with me. Richard did mention you as well SPP and I said I knew of you from the forums. If I'm not mistaken you've had this coin in hand?

I can't find any info on this, tyia. The obverse 5 matrix was intended to be used for the 1883s. How or why an Obverse 4 die was used, I'm embarrassed to say I don't know and am curious to know myself. Hopefully someone could shed some light on this. The first was found around 2010 as it mentions in that year's Charlton that there is only one known. There have been 17 found since then so I suspect there are more out there.

I do know the Heaton mint as any small business used what it had to make ends meet. Would it be wrong in saying a previous obverse was used to use them up. After all the slight varience could not be detected by plain eyesight.
