hi I recently purchased a large cent collection and once I get the collection I noticed the 1858 had scratches both vertically and horizontally on the reverse..the add made no mention of this or could be seen from the pictures.
and when I mentioned it to the seller he doesn't think it would affect the value this is part of the message from the seller
Quote:
I cannot feel it was a loss for you, as if the 1858 was an EF 45 in superb condition, it alone would fetch the price you paid for the book
well its not in ef45 its a vf but I'm ok with that as I could tell approx grade from photos but the scratches I couldnt.
i tried to take pics of scratches but not all would show with camera, what are your thoughts?
overall it is a descent collection but the 1858 is kinda what sets the price

If you want do capture scratches use a halogen light. I see the scratches and it must reduce the value by some.

In this case, I would think that the scratches on these, would knock off of a third of their value relative to equivalent unscratched coins.

In other cases it depends on the severity and area of the scratches.
Value assessment has to be done case by case.

gidjit, it is still a nice coin. If you are not happy with the purchase can you return it?

well it was a collection and the shipping was US$41 by the time it gets shipped back the shipping charges alone would pay for this coin

I would rather have a lower grade coin without the scratches. The scratches significantly affect the value.

I think that the seller was at the very least sloppy in not pointing out the defect as the 1858 is the major value to the collection, and even worse in pretending that it does not make a difference.

I agree with o-train that I would prefer a lower grade over a scratched coin. Something about the aesthetics.

My rule of thumb is that a relatively minor thing like a few scratches drop the value up to 1/2, while something major like a hole reduces it to 1/4.

It's hard to even use the word " scratches " on this coin, it looks more like "damage" or even "grafiti" it's not scratched by anything natural, it's scratched from some idiot taking a metal object and forcefully grinding the 2 together. It's worth less than $40-50 IMO. What a shame
I'm sorry you got burned there, the seller should take some responsibility here and offer you a partial refund and let you keep the coin, or offer to pay the return shipping since this is 100% his fault and it should not negatively affect you at all!
Rest in Peace

If you are considering resale value, it's not just the reduced price you lose.

Many collectors, especially those with some experience, simply do not want to "contaminate" their collection with a coin like this at almost any price.

You lose a goodly number of potential buyers with a coin like this one.

If you bought the coin, perhaps you should have asked for more detail about it......

Forget about after thoughts, it's initial intent here of bidding on this set. Is there any discrepancy regarding any other coins? If not then the intent was to get a large cent collection for a good price then re-sell the 1858, it didn't amount to the expectations and now has floundered.

I mean no disrespect here but it is what it is and I see no counter claim in such.

i kind of disagree when this is his description
Quote:
This is a complete book of Canadian large and small cents minus one variety - 1891 LLSD. All the keys are in very nice condition with the exception of the 1891 SLSD. I left this cent in the book, but am not accounting for it as far as price. It has a good obverse, and a very weak reverse. All the rest of the book is super.
when the scratches dont show in his pic it should be mentioned otherwise the sell just agreed the key dates are in very nice condition and not damaged

I'm sorry Gidjit for my reply, had I seen this last part of the description I would not have offered my comment. No hard feelings here.

I do support your thoughts now. 1858 being a key date.

Gidjit, you really only have two choices. Keep the lot or return it all. If you chose the later, the seller may offer you a partial refund but otherwise that's not something you have a right to demand. If the seller is not agreeable to refunding your shipping costs, you could file a complaint with the ebay's Dispute Resolution Center, allowing them to decide. Your risk is that you're granted a purchase refund, but not shipping costs.

If the 1858 cent was the only reason you bought the entire lot, much like I have in the past, there's a lesson to be learned - just buy the single coin instead. Seldom are bulk lots filled with quality coins with clear photos and itemized descriptions .....yet generally speaking they're tempting to buyers hoping to get a bargain. Meanwhile the seller gets rid of what's mostly junk box coin. In my opinion it's the exception that is rare.

It's a shame gidjit but, it will reduce the price what you were going to get for it.

/agree 100%. I think you could get your money back out from under it but it's the principal of the matter. the way the seller is justifying it but saying you got a good enough deal would infuriate me.

the fact that the chain saw marked weren't mentioned (in fact exact opposite was stated) is double insulting. if it's paypal backed I would make a point of demanding all funds, including shipping, be reimbursed and send it back.

if it credit card backed I would be tempted to tell them that you didn't get what was pictured and file a complaint.

good luck.
