What type of error is this and is it common? Lincoln is facing some type of major peeling. What is the value of this type of error?

You have a lamination error. The error is in the planchet and not the striking process. The coin metal is rolled much like cookie dough or pasta, and often shows improperly prepared metal. It is not uncommon, but perhaps more common during wartime production - especially with the silver US nickels. They do not usually command much of a premium, but make interesting pieces. Once you discover them, you'll spot them more frequently.
