I was wondering if anyone with experience in determining natural toning could tell me if this coin's toning is natural or artificial.

Wow, touchy subject.

What I will say is that if you weren't there when it happened, you will never know for sure. Don't get caught up in paying stupid money for toning, and if you like it, who cares if it's NT or AT.

Unfortunately it is fairly simple to accelerate the toning of coins. So you have to decide what you are willing to pay, and what you want in your collection.

So basically I just muddied the water even more for you.....

It's difficult to tell in this picture, but I'm leaning towards natural toning. Usually a coin that is toned artificially with heat it will be toned on both sides evenly, and this coin is not the same on both sides. It looks like album toning to me, and a nice 1832 5 cents.

Looks like it was housed in an old cardboard whitman holder with the obv facing in. I say NT.

Yep, looks like nice old album toning to me. I'd call it natural.

Honestly, that solid blue is so easy to do, I have to go with AT.
