Good morning, everyone!

I'm new to coin collecting and this site, and something has been bugging me.

I started filling up a Whitman Lincoln Penny folder from 42-74, and at the end of the book, there are three slots that say, "Varities." What does that mean? What is one supposed to put into those slots? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It is because the number of coins for that series does not equal the number of holes in the folder. They are extra holes, so you can put whatever in them; there is not anything specific that must be there.

Edit to Add: 1974 was the last year LHC were minted at San Francisco for circulation. 1975 only had two coins (1975 and 1975D). You could put those there, but you would still have one hole; and the next folder starts with 1975, so you would still have duplicates.

Many see the break between 1974 and 1975 as significant because of the "S" mint stopping.

1974 cents had large and small date varieties but I assume that the folder does not have them associated with 1974 so they are probably just generic variety slots. You could put anything in there from a doubled die to an RPM to small/large date not listed.

Another idea is to put "novelty" pennies in there. I've got one with a heart stamped on it. I'm guessing you can get all kinds of stamps on it. Just another idea.....
