Had the pleasure of viewing the nickle first hand. That had to be not long after the official dedication on a family auto trip to Calgary. An impressive sight for a young lad that dabbled in coin collecting.

Yes they did in 1951. I think it's the exact same design

Oh that's the large version! I had one of those too. But for the actual nickel in 1951, it used the same design

Wow. Sad to hear of his passing. I know the daughter of Mr. Szilva. She told me the entire story about how her father was instrumental on having this idea of the monument. She did tell me that her father was not well over the past few months. Last summer, she gave me some of her fathers tokens as a gift (all proudly stating Sudbury, Canada on each of them), after she found out that I collect Canadian coins. Here are some of the tokens I received. I placed a nickel dollar next to them to show the scale of how large these tokens are.

I had the opportunity to visit the actual Big Nickel monument in 1992 on road trip across Canada, and marveled how large the actual monument was in real life. I never would have imagined that 20 years later, I would get to be friends with the daughter of Mr. Szilva, by chance.

My condolences to the family.

"World's Largest" roadside attractions are big (pun intended) in Canada and I hope to someday see the nickle. Canadian Coin News has run a bunch of articles lately on giant coins and nickel production. It would be nice to see an "in memory" piece in the next issue.

Alex Trebek and the Giant nickel can be seen in my avatar.
