I got my software over the weekend to start logging and cataloging my coins. My software allows me to add photos and a serial number to each coin. <y intentions are to Flip all my nicer ones, add a picture of it, if an error a pictures of that and a serial number to each coin. I don't have any problems with the basics of the program. But when it came to thinking out a serial or assigned ID to each coin, I knew I needed suggestion from you people. I thought maybe the Wheats would start out with a WC then some identifacation system. Like WC00001 got the first one. With this program I can type in 1909 in the Wheat penny section and it will bring up all the 1909's in all MM ect. But then I need to be able to go to my storage box to get a particular coin with the number on it. How do you that store and ID large collections of coins do it. Any help appreciated. I have a couple of others freinds getting ready to do the same thing with their collection. I guess waiting on me to be the ginny pig.

By the way, I am entering my collection into a spreadsheet. It's not perfect, but I have columns for denomination, set, year, mint, grade, TPG if applicable, my cost if I know it, quantity, notes, and location (specific binder or specific box it's in). It has been quite a project over the last 2 weeks but I am almost done.

Wife got me a program called Pro Coin 2008. Does all the pricing, graph and updates first of every month. Does Canadian coins also so thats a huge plus for me. Pretty sweet program as far as I can tell so far.

I am in the process of doing the same think. I am using ExactChange software to catalog my collection. This program adds a sequential number to each coin to identify it. It also creates bar-code labels for each coin.

I use Coinmanage and they use a similar system (I'm guessing that's what you're using. Your suggestion is good, although instead of WC (for Wheat cent), I might just stick with LC (for Lincoln Cent) and then that will work for whatever kind of Lincoln you have. Actually an interesting thread might be what the common abreviations for coins are. I know of IHC for Indian Head and WL for Walkers. Anyways, as long as you create unique abbreviations that you are familar with, you can go for it. And with four or five digits, it'll be a long time before you outgrow the system. As you pointed out, one of the nice things about the system is you can arrange your collection in albums or in boxes of 2x2s and search by date OR you can go to the software and it will tell you all the coins of a certain date you have. Inventorying is a LOT of work, but can reap a lot of rewards if you do refer to it frequently after you've created it.

CoinHunter, they use pricing values from PCGS. Which personally I use alot as they seem to show the up/downs in the market. I would have liked to see them also include Greysheet pricing but I have my doubts they would have been allowed to show them. $37.00 was a good price I think and no up charges even with it monthly. Lady, thanks for the reply. One reason for the IHC, WC and MC is I have a ton of each and I could use different storeage boxes for each. IHC won't be a problem right now, I have only about 200 of them. WC I have maybe 300 carded already in the VF-UNC and possibly another 300 to do. Memorials? I bought 40 BU bank rolls last year and plan to break then up in 2x2s. I also have about 15 more coming next week I also plan to break up and card. Just figured it would be easier to find what I was looking for in seperate boxes. I keep telling my wife I need to quit buying until I get some of these carded, graded and logged. But I keep finding such great deals on BU rolls from the 50/60s I can't turn them down. Got 15 BU bank rolls today from a guy for $2.50 each 60-65 P/Ds. I'm such a sucker for BU rolls and copper isn't going down either. But I love hunting for varieties and errors. Its like a second chance for me to search these things since I got into it late. I finally decided on this program becuase I can log 6 pictures per coin, has updated graphs and updates monthly. It has a really easy to use log system where you just click on the say Wheat cent, pick the year, pick the grade, load pictures and it does the rest. It will even make a print out of what coins you need, show your unfilled spots, ask where you bought it, what you paid and even print the pictures with the coin info.Theres so many features I haven't even touched most of them yet. But, now the real work begins. Maybe it will even help take some of the sail out of my winds. Then I will get down to earth a little more of better grades of coins.

I am nearly done, and sorting my wheats by year into those square tubes. I ran out of those, so I stopped at the coin store by my house at lunch. I came out of there with 20 tubes, and 10 silver halves (the guy had them at $6/each which is just a touch below melt value and some of the coins were in AU+ condition. They were common dates of course, but I couldnt pass up the chance to get more of these at less than melt. But I am now 100% sure done until I get the inventory finished up this week (I hope).

Heres a tray I made to hold my wheats from 1909 to 1950. I am working on another one for my memorials. This one has the 25 count tubes in it. It was made to fit in a 4 drawer dresser and the next tray will layer under it. 50% are full and yes some don't have any in them, probably never will. But I need to start going threw these for XF-AU wheats and card them. Then start going threw my rolls, card the good ones and fill my tubes up. Between sorting, carding then ebtering then in the program it going to be a long road. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c...ennycase.jpg

I like your set up. I plan to try something like that or I might break down and buy a full box of the square pennie tubes and use that to store and sort the wheats.
