Here is my type coin for the 1788 Half Cent. This one came from a famous collection. It interesting to note that the this coin and the it's big sister where the first coins to have the word "CENT" appear on them.

This is a coin that is so beautiful it doesn't need a grade.

PCGS graded this one MS-64, Brown. It came from the Eric P. Newman collection. The coin has very strong luster on both sides. The only negative is a small planchet defect at 9 o'clock on the reverse.

If you don't have an account at Heritage Auctions, you should so that you can go into their achieves of past auction sales. The sign up is free. They have over a million coins up there, and a large percentage of them are photographed. You can't find a better place to do research on specific coins.

At any rate if you get on the Heritage site, check out the Massachusetts Half Cents they have sold. This piece compares quite favorably with the MS-65 graded coins that are pictured there.

Bill, Congradulation on owning a Eric P Newman example. I just finished the book "Truth Seeker The Life of Eric P Newman" it was an excellent read.

When you get a coin like this, who cares if it is a MS 63, or 64, or 65. They don't come much nicer. A true collector doesn't care about a numerical grade assigned by an opinion of one person. I agree it is a match for similar coins graded MS-65. The planchet defect shouldn't effect the grade.
