Hello, Have these been cleaned, why the yellow toning on the 1859? How does cleaning affect the value of a coin? What grades would be assigned (if they aren't cleaned)? ---- Thank you again! Edited by MarcusCoins 03/14/2016 11:11 am

The PEI coin, is the rotation up and up like our coinage today?

They look cleaned in my opinion. The 1859 is at VF30, but would probably be marked as VF details. The 1871, closer to EF45, or EF details

The rotation is not up and up, it's reversed

I don't think either one has been cleaned and they both look VF-30 at least to me. Taken out of the 2x2's may even be better.

Hi MarcusCoins Quote: How does cleaning affect the value of a coin? There is cleaning and there is cleaning ---I some times helps and other times kills the coin. Quote: why the yellow toning This is caused by the mixture of metal during the making of the coin or it could be some thing else and without seeing it in the hand one cannot tell. Hi I be-leave the 1859 is (PC59-32b2)? VF20-30 with details. The 1871 EF30-40 due to rim hit. correct me if I am wrong

The PEI cent has been cleaned. It's hard to tell with the '59 ... pictures outside the 2x2s may help.

Here's better pictures of the 1859. It looks quite a bit better than VF30, no?

I'm afraid both coins have been cleaned, no questions about that. The 1859 has been treated with a chemical of some sort, that's why it has those colors, and the PEI cent has been polished and also treated with a cleaner.
I agree the 1859 has better details than a VF, I would say an EF, but the cleaning has stripped away nearly all its value.
The details on the 1871 PEI cent are no better than VF, not sure what other memebers are seeing on this coin but I would say F15 polished/cleaned and rim bump.
To answer your question, cleaning severely hurts the value of a coin, especially coins as common as these two. Personally I would put $5 on each coin and take what I could get.
