So I've been posting a lot about gold lately. Although I can't afford to buy it, I like to talk about it

I was wondering why Indian $10 gold has such a premium, especially in MS 63 and above. It seems that these coins sell for a minimum of $1000 (typically). You can get a St Gaudens in MS63-64 for around $1400-1500 and that's double the gold. I understand you have to pay a premium for smaller denominations but the $10 Indian just seems high to me.

Why do the Indian $10 carry such a premium? Did these just circulate more since they are only $10 instead of $20 (I understand even $10 was a large amount back then though). Maybe there just aren't as many left in higher grades and that drives the price up?

The $10 Indians have sold at a premium compared to $10 Liberties for as long as I can remember, going back to Whitman bluebooks from the 1960's. At that time the premium seemed onerous, but it has declined percentagewise as the price of gold has increased. Right now it looks like about $40-50. The $10 Indian is an attractive coin.

Compared to $20's of either type, the lower gold denominations are not driven completely by bullion price because they are more affordable.

As with most coins it's a function of how many still exist AND how popular they are (demand).
Rest in Peace

A good deal of it is the simple desire to own a truly beautiful gold coin design. For many, it is equal to the St. Gauden's as far as attractiveness is concerned.

In my mind, the greatest non-classic gold coin design by far, even better than the StG. The simplicity of the obverse is stunning. It has always had a premium, as noted above, and it deserves it.

Popularity is the rule of thumb here.
