May be today's 65 , an excellent example of grade flation . Nice coin though. My new policy is STAY away from recently graded 3 letter ICCS and recently graded NGC and PCGS Canadian Silver Dollars unless they are absolutely top of the grade , blast white or pleasantly toned. The grade creep has become blatant. In most , but not all cases today's MS 65 Dollar is yesterday's MS63 to MS64.

In the end, you should be buying the coin, not the holder. Unfortunately, I'm one of the younger coin collectors and haven't gotten the opportunity to see older ICCS graded coins. I've seen maybe a dozen old ICCS silver dollars in hand. And while I do agree that a lot of the coins in MS65 holders now-a-days look nothing like what a 65 should look, some do. This coin I bought without getting a chance to look at the ICCS flip. It just looked nice. The toning was appealing, not many visible marks, and a possible SWL.

paulsz, would I be out of line to ask what you mean by younger? You will beat me in that category. By young I meant early 20's. Started collecting NCLT at 10 (as occasional Christmas/Birthday gifts) and circulation coins at 17 when I found a 1920 penny in my change

I now let the coin do the talking .....and not the old holder.

Good for you Paulsz, you should have a lifetime of enjoyment in numismatics.....wish I had been as focused as you at that age. Since collectors of your age are the future of this hobby I would like to ask you a serious question. What are we as a group of older collectors doing or not doing to interest and bring younger collectors to this hobby?

What are we as a group of older collectors doing or not doing to interest and bring younger collectors to this hobby? This might be going off topic, so I'll keep it short (and dollarman could add to this if he sees it, as he's one of the younger ones too). Personally, I don't notice much missing. At shows, it'd be nice to throw some cool facts about certain coins, or the history (something we wouldn't really know about). I'm always fascinated about the history of making coins and how things have led to where they are now-a-days. One thing that throws me off though, is that some people are in love with money. I know most of us here on the CCF enjoy coin collecting as a hobby, but plenty of people enjoy it more as a business. (I'm not trying to argue with anyone, and I myself am not perfect. If a coin has value and I'd rather sell it to get another one that i'd like more, I'll probably do that.) However, I've noticed that a lot of people ask the value before they ask what the coin is all about. Just my Two Cents. Again, not trying to argue, just my opinion.

What are we as a group of older collectors doing or not doing to interest and bring younger collectors to this hobby? that is gonna take some thought, but I dont think it is as much to do with what the older people in the hobby are or arent doing. I believe that things are just different for the more recent generations than they were for the generations before them. this is a very broad statement but I will blame the internet for both providing more things to do in their spare time that are alternatives to a hobby and for connecting collectors in an amazing way that was unimaginable not long ago...just like we are in this thread. i will come back some time tomorrow with more specifics to answering your question.

I joined a local coin club recently and attended my first meeting a few days ago. I was the youngest person there, and I'm not that young (early 30s). Most of the attendees were retirement age and beyond.
I think that collecting becomes more attractive as people get older because they have more disposable time and income. I spend between 10-20 hours a week on coin related activities. Most people my age with families and a profession do not have this time, I'm very fortunate.

Knowledge is the key here and one way to get more of it is to read the many books that do help explain the history and the making of Canada's early coins. Rob Turner has spend a great deal of time and expense putting together much info on the history of our large cents..and it's many varieties.. This link will get you started on your quest for more knowledge.. http://www.victoriancent.com/books.html
