Welcome macybee. I'm usually pretty quiet around here, but it is a great site and I read and learn things here every day.

If you succeed with your daughter let me know how you did it. Been trying to get my son away from video games. I limit his time and this weekend blocked the xBox from getting online until he does some homework that he missed and refuses to do (stinks having a dad with 25 years of IT experience :-) ).

How old is the daughter? My brother's girlfriend has a seven year-old daughter and at New Year's I sent her a couple of Whitman folders starting at Memorial (59). With the folders I sent three square tubes (they stack and are kind of toys themselves) with '60s '70s and copper '80s.

I also threw in a couple of inexpensive magnifying glasses (again, toys). The newer ones she can get from Mom's change & I didn't think 7 was old enough to stress over wheats. Mom says she was thrilled and was hooked. Total cost < $10.-

I've got several of these kits put together and ready to hand out to friends & relatives who see my Lincoln collection and say "I wish I could get my kid to do something like that." They have to have something to get them started. I know folders aren't good for the coins in the long term, but holes to fill and a few coins to get them started: it works. But, don't just give them the folders. Give them some pieces of the puzzle to get them started.

I will keep you all updated on my progress with my daughter. We started collecting pennies and the oldest one we have is 1949 we are working our way through each year. 50, 60s, etc. Thank you all for your input! Off to search my coins and read more posts.
