Need your help. I'm not very good at spotting these doubled dies and repunched mintmarks.

There are a few 1961D RPMs listed on Coneca's variety list but I'm not sure which this if any. Pictures are attached. Sorry, they aren't the best - taken through my loupe with a Sony Cybershot.

This one looks very much like Mechanical Doubling. With nickels, you'll see this a lot more often than other types of coins.

Vaslin has it, MD. Nickels do tend to have a lot of MD, guess it is because it is harder than either silver or copper and probably causes more die hop.

Hmm, it was my understanding that MD was flat, smashed and even rounded. I didn't see this as being flat or smashed.

Do you guys have a guide between to the differences?

Actually I have no idea how anyone can be so certain it's one or the other or anything at all. I see a couple of specs here and there that look 'off' but the overall quality and lighting of the image make it impossible to tell anything for sure.

My #1 indicator of the MD was picture #2. Notice how the height of the original mint mark (in yellow) is smaller than the height of the secondary mint mark (in purple). If it was a true RPM, the heights would be the same.
