AU-Details, harshly cleaned. In my opinion there is probably enough of a market for cleaned coins in higher grades that you likely could find a collector to buy it at the price you paid. Numismedia in AU-50 is $258, so about 20-25% of retail sounds about right.
Rest in Peace

Even the slightest damage on the Half Dimes makes any problems they might have look very distracting since the coin was so small. That said, there are a few minor abrasions but none of them would incur a reduction for a technical grade.

If certified, I'm sure it would come back in an AU Details for improper cleaning.

The price you paid was just fine. Cleaned coins of any type reduce the number of collectors willing to purchase them, but anyone who has collected for any time knows that a huge percentage of coins have been cleaned. The older they are, the more likely they have been cleaned.
