Is there a definitive resource online for information about total printing figures for classic U.S. Currency? I have seen a thread recently about surviving populations of notes based on TPG submissions, but I would like to research original production numbers for notes going back to 1862. Does such a database exist, and can I gain access for a reasonable fee (i.e. free).

When I inquired about the 1.2 Million Sheets of Currency Stock that is not accounted for in production records, yet delivered to the BEP under Contract from Gilbert Paper in the early 1960's, I was advised to contact The National Archive and Records Administration (as mentioned below in my reply from the BEP)..

You may want to start there..

As far as I know there are no records of how many notes were printed for the large size era. There are a few exceptions, though. The 1923 $10 Legal Tender notes had 696,000 printed. There are also official print amounts on star notes for the 1914 Federal Reserve Notes series as well as 1923 $50 and $100 Gold Certificates. Several other star note runs for large size are also known.

Print runs for large-size notes going back to the 1860s are readily available in Chambliss and Hessler, although this is not online.
