I have seen notes with tape and the damage once it is removed.

This brief article's message is in the same vein as the "Don't clean coins" advice often handed out.

100% ++. If you don't know what you are doing then absolutely, positively DON'T.

Our State Archives people are great at evaluating whether to attempt removal and restoration OR just leave it alone and enjoy it for what it is.

I have several and I just keep them in mylar holders.

I would think that a large percentage, of the tape repairs, would have been done by the non-collectors that see torn bills as a nuisance to spending.I've seen corner store clerks tape torn bills before putting them in the till.
The mention of stamp hinge repairs as an alternative is probably frowned upon now.An unhinged stamp realizes a higher premium now over a hinged stamp of the same grade.

Thanks for posting this! I remember an estate auction a few years back when the auctioneer taped (scotch tape) a number of heavily worn, damaged colonial and confederate notes to a piece of cardboard for display purposes. I decided that I wouldn't bid since I didn't know if I could remove them without damaging them (the auctioneer's assistant had taped all 4 sides of the notes and had gone way overboard) The winning bidder tried to remove the tape from the notes at the auction and managed to further damage several of them.
