Nice R2 coin! 1798 2nd Hair Style - S-174 as you noted : spike from 1 and sunken area on reverse at bottom of wreath.
A coin very similar to yours sold @ HA ex: Reiver in the first part of 2006.
Dark chocolate obverse with two minor scratches and light porosity on the bust and head area. Incusation / clash on reverse with what looks more like a "dark copper bottom saucepan" color, minor nicks and light pitting.
EAC sharpness 25 net 20 (my opinion). Shoulder drapery separated at neck but hair is less detailed. The eye appeal is quite good and probably better in hand. I cannot make an opinion on the originality of the surfaces.
Penny Prices (3rd) has '98 S-174 @ 1350 in VF20 & 2500 in VF30 (for avg coins); 750 in F12. I'd say yours would fall closer to the VF20 price. Very well bought at the price and probably not obtainable these days at what you paid for it.
