Hi gentlemen,

Going through my collection and came across this piece.

A 1963 Franklin half, no mint mark.

I just recently learned about 'FBL' halves, and do not know much about them. Are only certain dates applicable to FBL? Judging by the pictures, is this FBL or does it miss the mark?

Also, is this a gem proof? I mean this is uncirculated. You can even see the reflection of my phone camera on the obverse side of the coin, like a mirror. Plastic package is sealed, the scratches you'll see on the images are mostly from the plastic case.

My ultimate goal is to determine the value of this coin, what do you think?

Yes it is a proof . Not FBL , value without looking it up, about $15-$20 .

Please see the fourth image, I realize that you couldn't see it that well originally. 100% sure not FBL? Or should I chance it and get it graded.

Thank you so much for you time

Do not get it graded. Probably not FBL. In addition those are some nasty hairlines in that 4th photo. Could actually be impaired.

The fbl designation is not used on proof bens.

As a proof, it is by definition, fbl... All proofs are fbl because they are double struck under higher pressure than circulation issues.

What is the exception on an ms coin should be the rule on a proof, especially in the case of full bell line bens.

Do not submit for grading with hopes of a fbl... If the coin was a cameo with frosty/mirrored contrast, that would make the juice worth the squeeze.

Sorry, I never answered your question.
If it's in ogp, it is most likely a mint state proof, 64 or 65 is my guess without better pictures.

Worth $15 - $20

I think all those hairlines are on the mylar flip. At least I hope so.

As has been said, there is no FBL designation for a proof coin. And in this particular case, it looks as if they get mushy right before the left side of the crack.

I am all for grading coins. However, I dont think this one is worth the effort. I would put it at PF64. To bother grading you would want 67 or better IMO. Certainly if it were cameo.

From one Franklin collector.......Though it's a gorgeous coin, I wouldn't get this particular one graded.
