Saw this website mentioned on another forum. Checked it out and thought that it had some great information on a very underappreciated series. Apparently it's a fairly new site. I found especially interesting the survival rates and population information page.

Very interesting, especially the survival estimates. I'm surprised that the survival rates of the commmon dates 1870-73 are so low in comparison with the 1859-O, 1860-O, 1841, 1842 and 1843. There must have been a lot of melting. Except for the O dates, Seated dollars dated 1850-1865 are devilishly hard to find and priced accordingly. The survival estimates shed some light on why that is the case.

Maybe we should start with which date.

Thank you try much, Joe. Very interesting information.

I first saw David Bowers data on survival estimates of the Seated Liberty dollars back in the late 80's. This information was included in one his Newsletters which he used to publish when he was with the old Bowers & Merena. I still have that somewhere, and this is certainly an interesting update on his original figures 30 years ago.

I have noted there is a discrepancy between the surviving population estimates quoted in CoinFacts and the ones in this CO update, for example:

1861 Dollar:
CoinFacts: est. 1100
OC: 500

1862 Dollar:
CoinFacts: 1100
OC estimate: 350

1870 CC Dollar:
CoinFacts: 1000
OC estimate: 750

I would guess the OC estimate is more accurate?

I use NGC and/or PCGS populations as relative indicators of survival. Current total NGC population of the uncommon 1861 is 74 and the 1870cc is 217, while the common 1860o is 891 and the 1871 is 749. The ratios of NGC commons to uncommons are in the 3-12 range, which indicates quite a bit higher survival than the 10-20 ratio range indicated by the OC survival estimates for the same coins. NGC has probably had a lot of regrading of the scarcer coins, which would tend to understate their scarcity by overcounting. And a much lower percentage of common coins end up in slabs, which would also raise the common/uncommon survival ratio.

One other point is that the NGC methodology shows the 1861 to be a much scarcer coin than the 1870cc. The OC estimates hint at this but I think that they miss the true magnitude of the difference.

I was from the vey beginning intrigued by the 1861-1865 civil war dates. I remember I had a difficult time, already 25 years ago, finding examples of some of these dates which were both appealing and reasonably price. At the end I had to compromise on quality as my budget was limited. Also, I remember 1861 and 1862 were the toughest of the series, with 1861 the most difficult.
I have read somewhere just recently that the toughest of the civil war dates is actually 1863.
