My brother recently bought this 1855 type 2 gold dollar graded AU58 by NGC. Here are some photos. I think it is a good investment. What do you think?

Depends on how much he paid. If he overpaid, it will not be a good investment. If he got a good deal, then maybe :)

George did you buy that coin from J. and J coin in new Windsor? I was looking at a very similar coin with a broken part of the slab a few months ago.

Yes, it does depend upon how much he paid. Going by the close-up pictures, and that takes it to a semi-guess, because such pictures really need to be clear on a coin of this size, I'd say that it is better than average for an NGC graded gold coin. NGC has disappointed me at times with its gold coin grading.

If he likes it it's a good investment. I normally don't like small coins because I have trouble seeing the details. But I'm liking dollars more and more, especially the branch mintages. I'd especially like to have one from a southern mint.

Some dealers have been saying for years (since the 1970s) that the type II gold dollar is over rated as a type. Although the design was only issued for one year and parts of two other years, the 1954 and 1855 coins are around in fairly large quantities. I have noticed this over many years of going to the major shows.

The type is really only rare in choice MS-63 and 64 or Gem MS-65+ in part because they were often not well struck.

I know this post is about Type II dollars, but I have noticed that the price of Type I gold dollars have been dropping significantly over the past several years. I recently picked up a PCGS graded Type I in MS-64 for half what they were selling for a year ago on ebay.

Yes, the type I gold dollars have taken a dip, but some of that might be due to "grade-flatiron." The grading has gotten loser in recent years.
