Quick question....

Over the week I started going through quarter rolls from TD Canada Trust bank. Went through about 3: 500$ boxes.

I was shocked that there wasn't even 1 quarter pre 2001.

What's going on here?...anyone have an answer

Thanks folks

I did a dime box the other week, first one in a few years, seems things have really dried up, or at least in Canada. 95%+ were 2000 or newer and no silvers. That was from a TD bank as well.

If your not after silver and just in it for the hunt, I got 2 boxes of cents from the first bank I went to, so dispite popular belief, cents are still out there and I enjoyed going through those much more.

If you are looking for hole fillers 1970s-2000 I'd try another bank though, as those can accually be found. Possibly the rolls you went through just came back from the mints alloy recovery program (or whatever they call it).

Being a frequent CRH, my best advice to you is to avoid any rolls that are not hand rolled by bank customers/businesses. I only purchase hand rolled coins from my banks, and usually make out quite well. My last purchase of 70 rolls of hand rolled dimes netted 6 silvers. I usually get about $20 in US coins per $500 as well.

I average about 2-5000 worth of coins a week so I usually net about two 1oz 999 rounds for free just from the US coins I pull and purchase bullion with.

I searched nickels and quarters for a couple years a while back and one thing I noticed was it made a huge difference where I got the coins from. TD & Royal banks nearly always contained years from 2000 and up. Mind you the best $$$ nickel I ever found was a 2007 so you just never know.

Recently went to a CIBC and bought 40.00 in nickels and there was still quite a few 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Now it could be that some one was clearing out their stash as there were quite a few different dates that were unc, so they went into my nickel box. So I guess it's also very much hit and miss. My daughter works at a bank and she sets aside all the pennies and other items of interest that come in. I've seen quite a few on here that have a bank contact and that's probably about the best way to get the coins for face.

lol Alexer. A couple of years ago I went to that same CIBC and the teller told me that an older gent had brought in close to 20,000.00 in change that week and he still had about the same left at home to bring in yet. Apparently he had been saving all this change since his mid teens and he was probably close to 70 now. Funny things people do, mind you that's a nice little windfall for emptying your pockets each day into a jar lol.

The coins have been recycled within their own banking system and most likely been ARP.

Me personally, I search nickels! I managed to find a 1940 and some other king George VI nickels in recent boxes from RBC :) also it's good to get to know your local bank teller. Keep on CRH. And one thing I do it to keep pre 1980 Canadian nickels for there nickel content. Mainly becuase they are getting scarcer every year with the ARP the RCM's doing.

One of my habits that drive my wife crazy is searching our pocket change and doing same when we are shopping which I'm sure a lot of us do and it is interesting to note that older coins are disappearing for sure. The odd time in my travels I find some 25 cent coins from the 70's or 80's but slowly dwindling down. The next rainy day I will search out the few containers I have for fun to see how many are pre 2000. Last year I was at a Casino [ just in for lunch ;} ] and always change some bills for change hoping for a find and this fella in front of me laid down a bunch of nickels that he wanted some bills for and lo and behold I noticed he had a few coins form the 30's in his stack, I nearly jumped over the counter and asked the teller if she would let me have those coins which she did but the few 30's I got were VF but still a nice find. I had the opportunity to meet this same guy not too long after that and asked him about the older coins he had turned in and he informed me that one of his relatives passed away and had a lot of older coins/paper money that he didn't think were worth anything but sold what he had for a few bucks at LCS. Oh well, same ol story we hear a hundred times over eh.

The ARP is alive and well in the West making it harder to find older stuff. Atlantic Canada is not participating much yet so there are lots of pre-2001 coins to be found, even in boxes rolled by G4S or whatever security company the banks are using here. I find lots of US coinage too which is good for repatriating if you cross the border once in while.

I live close to the border. Sometimes I et quarter rolls from CIBC and specifically look for US coins. Not only have Pre-2001 quarters almost vanished, US coins are harder and harder to find. A few years ago (if I remember correctly, summer of 2011 when the exchange rate was in favour of CAD) some people in my area dumped US coins as Canadian coins into rolls and gave them to a local bank, which made the bank take measures to avoid that from happening. Now everyone in my area seems to crave for American quarters.

The only luck I've had CRH is with nickels. Dimes are mostly 2000+ with a few in the 70's and 80's. As for quarters all I've found in the past year is 2000+.
