Aside from the nasty hit on the observe, this could have been a real nice coin. How is this an AU and not PMD or some kind of a mint error?

If you are worried about the marks on the cheek, don't.
It's a bag mark caused by the reeding of another Morgan.
Bags were often tossed around causing "hits" of one coin on another.
It's still considered MD and therefore gradable (not DETAILS).

Bag marks are not considered as PMD and will not get a details grade.

The Reed Marks on the cheek are distracting because of their size and will hurt the value of this coin.
