How did the memorial get behind the collar of his coat?

Looks like glue to me + no sign of double strike on reverse. Two coins glued together and then separated.

The final two photos lead me to believe this is a man made 'error' ... although I am not an expert I'll explain what I see in the photos ...

A 'jailed Lincoln' clashed die would show evidence of the entire Memorial across the entire obverse fields ... but NOT on the obverse portrait which (obviously) is recuse in the striking die and therefore not subject to impact by a clash.

The ragged edges of the Memorial as shown imposed on the obverse portrait are an absolute indication (to me) that the impression is somehow 'stuck onto' the coin ...

Likely many ways to do this ... most likely has already been suggested as two coins glued together then separated.

Post mint damage. Glue is definitely the answer.

What gives it away is the shiny copper beneath the glue. The glue blocked oxygen & the environment from toning that part of the coin. Nice shiny copper v/s chocolate brown toning.Things that make you go humm?

Looks like a hammer job or a vise job.

Kind of strange that it looks like the coat is on top of the memorial. Seems like if it was glue, that would't be the case, but I have seen stranger things on here that have resulted from PMD.

If it were a glue job wouldn't the memorial part be higher than the obverse side of the coin.
