Another that I discovered in wife's G'Mothers collection. This one is a 1928-S. I have seen the listing for the Large S in 1928 but this seems to be a small S over a large S. In the last pic is a crude attempt to outline what is visible in person. UPLOADED BETTER OUTLINE PIC SEE BELOW Thoughts on this one? Thanks in advance, Robert Uploaded another pic with better outline of LARGE S !! See below Edited by Roberthas 03/28/2016 7:58 pm

Here is a side by side of the two mint mark styles for this year: Looks like a small mint mark.

Yes, I agree that the TOP S is a small S. I am talking about it appearing to be on a LARGE S. The top of my crude red mark traces the top correctly, the bottom red line does not. The Lower S is barely larger on the bottom, than the upper S mint-mark. Do you see that? Thanks, Robert

On the top image you can see the same thing on the top area of the digits and the mint mark. I just see a small 'S'.

Must agree - cannot see any evidence of the large MM, which is actually sort of enormous in hand. But anyway - to the CCF!

I will try a couple of more photos. These are in an attempt to show the raised area is NOT the same as the numbers are raised. Hopefully it will be visibly evident, there is a distinct line of raised below the SMALL S, if not, I will give up. I took photos with three spacers to move the 50mm lens away from the camera, then used four magnifiers on top of the lens. What fun :):):) Thanks, Robert

OH!, and I apparently went too low on the picture quality and now the pics are really small... I give, I am not going to continue to take up the forum over this. Thanks, Robert

If you look at coop's image, the large and small s are not even close to the same position.

I thought all mint-marks were done by hand until, like 1989 or so? On another justification, all over mint-marks (OMM'S) are visible by the fact that they were not struck in the exact same place...
Sorry for the all caps portion of my post and thanks for fixing it, Bobby131313.

Roberthas: That is true. The locations can vary depending on there the punch lands. The large mint marks are considered more scarce, but no prices for these different mint mark punched coin were mentioned. So if it happened on more than one die, the locations will be different for both mint mark punches. But I doubt that both punches were present at the time to make a small over large mint mark punch. When the mint mark punch is done, it is discarded and the new one continues forward. The 1946 year had three different mint mark punches for the 'S' mints that year. One is harder to find, (ball serif) but no extra premium for this one yet. Possibly one to save especially in BU.

Last evening I read about leaving your inheritance collection and how most people would rather have the money than the coins. It is written here on CCF somewhere in book form about appraising your collection. I am one of those people who inherited a collection.. I have no desire to "save" these and am only trying to make a sound decision about what to do with them. What a PAIN-i-t-A this has been and over a LONG time! I have caught the bug of looking at coins but its double sided in that I don't want to keep them and have fun finding... I would love to just sell the whole lot "semi-blind" as I am and just be done with them. Then, the wife brings me a roll from the bank because she knows I enjoy the looking part. :) What a mess I thank you for the explanations, ESPECIALLY the part on values. Thanks, Robert
