Edit: The more I look at these the stupider I feel

Not stupid. That implies an inability to learn which is not the case here.

I don't see the completed ebay listings but will say the 1842 is not a $300 coin in today's sluggish coin market. The 1847 looks like a pretty good deal at $265 if genuine.

Personally I don't like the look of the 1842, not to say that it is fake, I don't know but it looks suspect. The surfaces of the coin look off and the reverse appears to be considerably higher in grade than the obverse. The 1847 doesn't immediately set off any red flags in my mind but at $265 it is a deal that is a little too good to be true in my opinion.

Third party graded coins by PCGS & NGC in these grades are only a few hundred dollars more. In heavily counterfeited series such as this one, I personally think the peace of mind is very much worth the additional cost if you are not dealing with a seller that you trust.

Sorry for resurrecting a dead thread (as a newbie please let me know if that is frowned upon). But I received the 2nd coin today and took normal pics. Looks a lot different now than in the sellers pics. Weight, magnet test, color, texture, and tone test all are perfectly normal as far as I can tell. Definitely cleaned roughly but looks decent nonetheless in hand if I don't look too closely. A nick which I hadn't noticed before at the obverse rim right by the first star. Die lines on the reverse shield are crystal clear now.

Strongly suggest you return both of them, or you will someday find yourself in the same position of trying to sell suspect/altered surface coins.

EF Details, net EF-40. Better coin than sellers pics, at least...

The 1847 may be a problem coin but it has near-AU detail and might serve as an acceptable type coin. $265 is a pretty attractive price and I don't think you would have much trouble getting at least that much if you sell it at some future date.

The 1842 is more seriously altered and I would put that $300 into something else.

When you say altered, do you mean cleaned / surface treated or truly altered like tooled or something similar?

(And on a side note - my old Galaxy 4 takes some surprisingly good coin pics that close up. I had an LED floodlight 6 inches away which helped.)

I think it should be mentioned that Seated dollars are more likely to suffer from cleaning....sure there are uncleaned examples around one can find them with some searching.

If I were going to keep one of these I'd choose the 1847 simply because you can see the pick up points to easily confirm authenticity. The cleaning to me isn't as bad as some I have seen.

I'd return the 1842.
