Looks like one of two things. A nickel that has been acid treated to bring up the details. Or.. One that has been buried and is slightly corroded. I think the market name of the acid used is Nick-A-Date or some variation thereof.

I'd like to see larger pictures of the coin. I 'm curious to see the effects of this acid/errosion more closely.

Acid a strong possibility. I will weigh the coin and post results. That should resolve the issue as a acid eaten coin should weigh light. Thanx for answers....G.

It wont be that much lighter if it is acid treated. It only etches a small amount of the surface unless it is left on the coin too long.
A bigger picture would help to see if my guess is correct.

F.I.R. I do not have a very good computer and lack decent software. Could not use them too well even if I did.
I can possibly email a Pic. This is possibly an eaten coin. Judging from it's look, if it has been etched, the weight should indicate it somewhat. The metal displacement looks rather substantial. I went to weigh it and lo and behold my scale decided it was time to quit working.. done.. zero.. nada!
I always take a second look at war year coins for mistakes. Ya just never know. If it turns out to be a lemon, I will just add it to my rather large and still expanding cache of misfits. I believe that I saw this coin or another like it many years ago. For the few dollars paid I took a shot. Will purchase scale in a few weeks and weigh it.
I will try and upload larger pics. in a few days. Thanx for response... G.

I did notice that when I look at the surface of the rim around both sides of the coin, it does not appear to look corroded or etched. In fact it seem undisturbed and smooth. I would think that if coin was acid treated or buried, the rims edge surface would show that. Need that new scale. G...

That coin was produced in the springtime when Buffalo shed their winter fur. Helpful, huh?

As I believe that nickel does not rust, this rust is fun to look at. It will remain on the coin which is where I believe that it belongs. There is rust on rev. of coin and also embedded into different areas of the 3rd side of coin, the rim. I can only assume that this rust was struck into coin when made. Besides, believe it or not, coin has little wear. Looks AU. Will weigh and post results. Sure looks mangy dont it?

I read over your posts and realized that I forgot to say it was OK to email me a picture. I would be happy to take a look.
