Lion-like portrait indeed...kinda looks like a puppet. Neat coin to go along with your Hethum II and Hetoum, Ron. You seem to forming a nice subset of Cilician Armenia within your medieval collection.

Thanks Bob, I find the history of this short lived kingdom very interesting. I would like to try and get all the rulers, but I think it might get a little expensive especially the silver coins.

Unusual and interesting coin as always... If you hadn't given the attribution I would have thought it to be Visigoth or Viking. I imagine you have a couple of those too?

It looks a nice design and nice size, not a particularly strong strike (though I see many Armenian coins far worse) but we can see all the elements so a good example and addition to your collection :)

I am having a bit of trouble working out the lineage, you say also known as Levon II but I see a remarkably similar coin to yours listed as Levon I. 1199-1218 AD The dates seem to overlap...

Also completely different colour to yours, yours looks like a silver coin from the photo yet is an AE. How does it look in hand?

David, it is a bit confusing. From the reference I have it states that Levon I was Prince of Cilician Armenia from 1123-1138 with no known coins existing.

Levon II was Prince of Armenina from 1187-1198, at which time he became the first king of Cilician Armenian assuming the name of Levon I King of the Armenians.

Your coin has a very nice strike and shows a bit more detail than mine. Yours also has the crown with five dots mine has six. I'm not sure what the difference is, but the crown can have 5, 6, or 7 dots.

This is a new type to me (not an area I have looked at before) so you have taught me something.

One would presume that the different number of dots in the crown do have some significance it would be interesting to find out what.

Anyway congrats on the new addition.
