I know nothing about Japanese coins but I have 6 spaces for 2x2's underneath a selection of 6 Chinese coins. I thought that I would get half a dozen Japanese to fill these spaces.

I chose these coins from the same seller hopefully receiving a postage refund for combining them (the postage adds up to as much as the coins if that doesn't occur) Is it me or does ebay no longer have an "add to basket" feature?

Anyway, I don't have too much information to write on each 2x2 so anything extra that you can give me (like Krauss Number or additional information) would be much appreciated.

#4 is Chinese. It is a Ming Dynasty coin. That issue has one of my favorite character sets.

Nice coins in the lot! The Bunkyu 4 mon is among my favorite cash coins... just a nice break from the (...) (...) tong bao formula.

Also a bit of light reading on Japanese history:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Koan

Through that lens, the common motif of waves on Japanese coins makes a lot more sense. Not once but twice the Mongolian army set its sights on Japan and assembled a massive invasion force. Both times, the Sea of Japan was hit by a massive typhoon which crippled the invasion fleet, leading them to slaughter when the made landfall. The Japanese saw this as a sign that they had won the favor of the heavens, and dubbed the eveny Kamikaze, or divine wind. Wave patterns or designs can be found on:

4 mon coins from the 1700s-1860s, when the imperial powers of the West set their eyes on this resource-rich island and encouraged missionaries to try to undermine traditional values to open the doors to "trade" (colonization)

Taisho 5 and 10 sen coins, 1920-25

Various 1 and 10 sen coins during WWII

Fascinating history there... the Mongols were tough people but the Japanese are such a stubborn enemy, with such a fighting spirit I think they would be the last opponent I would willingly engage in battle. With the elements also against them I am not surprised the Mongol casualties were so harsh.
