Fun idea for a thread...
It can be your money, or through a job. What is the largest amount of hard, physical, "up a creek if you lose it" cash you have ever handled?
For me, it was when I purchased my first car. I had been driving my mom's old car which we all knew was on its last legs, so I had been specifically saving every penny of my paychecks for a down payment on a new car. My dad was a conspiracy theorist at the time (banks closing and confiscating your money, yadda yadda), so at his suggestion I cashed every paycheck in $20s while maintaining a couple thousand in my checking account.
When the time came, I took over $6,800 in $20s to the car dealership when I went to sign the paperwork. I can still see the cashier's forehead vein throbbing--it was past time for him to go home. I also emptied out my checking account and with a couple thousand borrowed from my parents, I owned the car upfront.
The most I ever handled at once in my position as a cashier was over $3,500. It was the holiday season, and at least three people bought flatscreen TVs in cash that day.

I've held $5,000 and $10,000 notes. It's bizarre that a sheet of paper essentially no different than a $1 other than the organization of the print is of such greater face value.

Working as a cashier for the CIBC many moons ago I used to have to balance just over one million dollars every day, which meant physically counting each note and almost every coin (when you got to the shared tray of loose change, if it was anywhere close to $200, you'd just say, "Yeah, that looks about right.").

From 1972 to 80 I was Deputy Curator of the National Currency Collection in the Bank of Canada. At one point I held a several-inch high stack of 40-on sheets of $1000 bills. I had at least 100 sheets, so at $40,000 per sheet, that comes to $4,000,000! I also was in one of the gold vaults, full to the ceiling with gold bars. But I only held one bar at a time. Those babies are heavy!

Well being a teller even at a smaller in-Walmart branch for a CU, whatever the amount a brick of $20s was I think $20,000? It was quite a bit to have in your hands!

About 5,000 pounds sterling when I closed one bank account and opened another. I could have transferred it quite easily and safely without handling it, but I thought it would be more fun to have the cash, even for a few hours. And I did check the banknotes for errors and unusual serial numbers - but there was nothing worth keeping!

With the exception of some cash for coin shows and flea markets, I seldom ever have or need cash. Lately I would think the most cash I've had at one time on me was about $100. Just no longer need cash.

not including holding gold or silver but only cash, I would think the highest amount I have ever handled at once was $1000 CAN. that I saved up for the last Toronto coin expo. may sound low to some of you but its pretty hard to save that much if you're only 15.
Feel free to call me Will.

We had some work done for cash on our house and had about $4,000 in hundreds a few years ago.
I have a friend who builds houses - he built a house for a Greek guy and his wife. They owned a mom and pop restaurant. Whenever my friend needed to do a payment draw, this guy would go back into the safe in the back of the restaurant and pull out bills; once he said he paid him over $100k in cash, including smaller bills. Paid for the entire house in cash. My friend was like "what do you even do with that much cash"? Said he felt like a drug dealer taking it to the bank.

I hit a slot machine once for $2500. Of course I had to go to the bar befor going home. I'm not much of a drinker so I only had one but hanging out with my wallet bulging was an interesting feeling. It's amazing how much more confidence you have with that much money in your pocket... I didn't go home alone that night, lol

$70,000 when I was a teenager and a bank teller, me and another teller had a race to see who would have the most cash in their box by the end of the day, needless to say the management was not thrilled.
