Hi all, after 30 years of collecting coins I'm starting to explore US currency. Can anyone recommend a good one volume guide/reference for 19th century US banknotes (broken) and private issue currency? I've recently picked up the Krause standard catalog of US paper money and the Confederate States paper money but am having a hard time finding anything other than Bowers multi volume work for non-governmental issues which is probably too much for me to absorb at this point. My interest is southern currency if that matters. Thank you.

The SPMC offers a series of books on obsolete currency notes of the states and banks (At least they used to). If you think you might be serious in this area, I recommend joining them. You could also search for them on ebay. I do not know of any modern (post 1960) single volume on such currency notes. Good luck!

The definitive reference on obsolete currency is Haxby's Standard Catalog of United States Obsolete Bank Notes. http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Cata...p/1440211302 This used to only be available in a four-volume set that cost around $700. But now it can be bought as a set of CDs for $250. Many collectors specialize in one or two states, so Krause has broken the set down even further. You can download PDF documents of banknotes from a specific state, sometimes for less than $10. http://www.krausebooks.com/catalogs...k+notes

There's a book titled, Southern States Currency by Hugh Shull that might be worth acquiring.

I don't own this book so I don't know how useful it will be to your collecting needs however there is a take a look inside option on Amazon.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've seen some of the ones above. I ended up ordering Bowers Obsolete Paper Money issued by Banks today for a general history/reference as well as a copy of Pennell's Obsolete Banknotes of NC for starters. How I've made it this far without getting much into this part of the hobby I don't know. It's truly fascinating !!
