This is my first attempt at coin photog. Let me know what you think. (of the pics and the grade.) lol.

I bought 5 of them off of ebay the other day, and they just arrived. I know that it is just an everyday old morgan, but I need to work on my grading skills. I know what I think, but I just want to know what you guys think.

I took them in to a local coin shop this afternoon to see what he would grade them and he said, "I don't grade other people's coins." Is this a common policy? Why?

Thanks,
Morg

Oops, Might need these...

MS63-64. Just some nicks on the neck. Cheeks are clear.

Most coin shops will give you an opinion. Must have been having a bad day.

"I dont grade other peoples' coins" -- think about this:

1. He's in the business
2. He may not want to risk being quoted
3. If you're not selling it to him, he's not grading it.
4. If there's a chance you might sell it to him, do you want his fox's grading on the chicken coop?

Cynical, huh?

Most people have to realize that coin shops are here to make money. Money to go home and feed their kids and pay for a car or eduation. They did not start the business to give out free advise and tell you how you did on ebay.
If you are a regular customer and buy coins there on a regular basis, I'm sure they won't have a problem helping you out once in a while. But if you just want to bombard them for free advise, grading comments and have them pull out coins you have no intention of buying, they have better things to do. It is, after all, a business.

Nice common date MS-63 with odd toning due to improper cleaning IMHO

No, there is no toning, I think that the 'toning' you see is from the ambient light in the room. I think that there was something red nearby.

Yea, I understand this. I had only been in there a couple of times before, but I bought some supplies both times. And actually I would have been willing to sell a couple of the morgans.

Also, the 2x2's that they are in say UNC on them. When he glanced through them he said, "they say UNC, but they are not even close to UNC, give me a minute and I will show you what and UNC coin looks like." I told him I had some other errands to run, but thanks for his time.

Of all 5 coins that I showed him, the worst one would grade at least AU-55, IMO.

Nice MS64, I like the toning (unless the scanner did that).

Morgannoob - This is a case where there is not much of a price spread between AU and Unc.
Looks like the coin shop was trying to help and educate you but you didn't have time to stick around. I'd take him up on it. The best way to learn how to grade is to look at a lot of examples and knowing what to look for.
