I just purchased this 1879 Morgan in the black sealed government holder for $65. Anyone got a grade? Did I get a bargain?

I'm going to buck the trend and call it a strong 63, probably 64. If I'm reading the scan right, the vertical mark between the eye and mouth is not as prominent in-hand as the scan shows it. That leaves only the horizontal mark southeast of the nose to detract. The fields look pretty nice, and the reverse is excellent. There are virtually no bagmarks.

Yep. That's a good buy.

I agree. My first thought was MS64.

it is a nice buy, now if it had those small C's under that wreath it would have been a GREAT buy, as far as grade I am leaning towards 63 myself with a shot at 64 from NGC (which would be the only place you would want to send that coin to because they will leave it in the Government Holder)

"Is that a GSA holder?"

Yes I believe it is a GSA holder that says "United States" and "Uncirculated Morgan dollar"

You got a good deal at $65 no matter what the grade! I'd go MS63. Take it for what it's worth though, I only have 2 Morgans in my collection.

Are those chunks out of the rim, or is it just the holder? MS62 common date, you got a good deal.

gbchaosmaster, those are part of the holder (like in the pcgs rattlers).

The non-CC gsa hardpacks that have been graded are included in the NGC population reports, and the variety is designated as gsa. The total number released by the gsa was estimated as 28,000, but no one documented the number of each date included in the 28,000. One can estimate the total coins included for each date by looking at the number graded for each date. Here is a listing of the coins graded, by date, with the rarest first:

1882-O 1
1878-P 1
1899-O 1
1884-P 2
1900-O 2
1898-O 3
1904-O 3
1882-P 4
1890-S 4
1878-S 5
1902-O 5
1901-O 7
1903-O 18
1879-P 25
1882-S 31
1881-S 32
1883-P 36
1885-P 36
1886-P 42
1881-O 50
1880-S 83
1883-O 97
1887-P 108
1879-S 127
1884-O 144
1885-O 176

The dates with the lowest number graded sell for the highest premiums. There are some dates that have not been graded yet. The dates with the most graded sell for the lowest premiums.

There were 97,591 soft pack gsa coins packaged and sold. Again, no one knows how many coins of each date were included in the total.
