I have been chomping at the bit to start photographing some of my coins. My setup is simple, at the moment. I have an RPS Copy Stand and a Canon 450D. Right now, I am in the process of improving my setup, so please bear with me. My wife is the one who is a hobbyist photographer, but I am trying to do this on my own - like they say, "for better or worse". If my terminology is off, it is due to the fact that these are probably the first pictures that I've taken with any sort of reasonably good non-idiot camera.

What I am missing from my setup is actual lighting sources right now. I am looking at getting a few of the Ikea goosenecks for LED lighting, as well as a couple of Ottlite desk lamps, when I catch them on sale. From there, I will see what else to try - i.e. halogen, CFL, etc. I have a set of extension tubes en route, which will be here tomorrow. Considering that I am using just a standard Canon 50mm lens with a .25m focal length, I started with larger coins. I would like to eventually invest in a good macro lens, but that is further down the road. I do have an adjustable zoom lens that would work for macro, but the focal length is 1.2m, which is larger than the capacity of my copy stand.

Without further ado, I give you a recent acquisition. A raw 1855 large cent with upright fives. I used the camera flash - my lack of lighting - and manually focused. I did a better job on the obverse, for focusing.

Obviously, my first impressions are that the lighting is harsh and the reverse focus is slightly off, as mentioned.

Otherwise, though, I am pretty happy with this.

Any feedback would be most appreciated.

I think these are really good first efforts! Your impressions are the same as mine, lighting and focus can be improved. How does the coin in hand compare to the pictures? They look very natural to me.
Did you manually focus? Do you wear glasses? I would have a very difficult time getting critical focus without tethering to the PC, and using the monitor with my old eyes and need for reading glasses. Tethering makes it easy.
Play around with the angle of the lighting, digital film is cheap! Take lots of shots, and try different things. Bounce the light off a sheet of paper, shoot with only natural light from the window, try everything, and see what you get. Lighting is probably the hardest aspect of coin photography.
Have fun, and good luck!

Thank you, very much! My wife was surprised that I had done as well as I thought that I did, especially on the obverse.

To answer your questions, I do wear glasses. Interestingly, though, I used autofocus on the reverse and manually focused the obverse, just to see how the two compared. I believe that I did better than the autofocus, on this one. In this case, I did not tether. I have played with the EOS Utility and tethering in my office, but the copy stand just won't fit on my desk. I'll load up the Canon software on my laptop, and play with that, as well. In this case, I did use a wired shutter release. Figured at $20, the remote shutter release was a good investment, in the event that I was not tethered.

Appearance-wise, it is interesting. I can definitely see there being a toning difference between the front and back in person, but it is definitely more pronounced in the photographs. I do not know how this coin was stored, i.e. if it had been in an album, in contact with other coins, etc. I had figured that it would be a good example for a type set, and the price was very right. Posted it in the grading subforum, too, as I am on the fence if it has been attempted to have been cleaned or not. I know that we have a flash with a diffuser that I was going to play with a little later, while waiting on the lights that I have ordered and when I can get to Ikea. Not sure if the time will allow for it today, but I was also going to put together a simple axial setup, too.

Again, thank you for the feedback. This subform has been invaluable in getting me motivated to start trying my hand at this. I understand how getting a rig setup can be a hobby in its own right, too!

I agree with gymcoachdon and can only add that you take notes and number your photos to your notes. Great first effort.
