I just picked this up at the local coin store.
I got it in the raw for my WWII set...it spoke to me and said...."pick me"

The one nick in front of his nose on the field, other than that, a few hits on his head.
The rev has a tic group under "LURI"
Other than that, the field is perfect. a few hits on the building.
The vertical lines in the field on the rev look like die scratches.

Here is my question, the fields are SOOOOO shiny, the photo does not do it justice. I'm having a hard time capture the glossiness of the field. Could we consider this proof like? SanFran didn't make proof back then, but man are these fields glossy.

The tan color in the reverse is my hand reflection.
Let know your thoughts and grade.

Thanks
Dan

Looks like a normal business strike, probably with fairly early dies.
Rest in Peace

Looks like it started out as a gem bu business strike ,then briefly circulated but in that short time was roughly mishandled . That's my assessment , I'm sure other members will have their own .

I see nickels like this every now and then. They are eye catching and I have bought a few myself. Maybe it is the photos or the angle but this is how I see it. Notice on the obverse the condition of the hair especially how the ribbon at the neck fads out? Then notice on the reverse the details on the building? These are faded or appear to be worn. I do not think this coin has circulated but what I do think is that the die was polished to get a little more life out of it, this would account for the mirror like finish. Perhaps someone in 1941 had this coin catch their eye also so they stashed it away or put it in some sort of collection and has been passed around form one collector to another. Only this Jefferson could tell you.

So the lack of grades tells me..the coin is lower grade than I think and no one wants to hurt my feelings?
Bring it guys, I need to learn.

I will agree there are hits on the high spots of the obv and rev.
I think that just the hits from being in a roll or coming in and out of a tube roll, do you know what I mean?

The fields are 100% clean I kid you not besides the hits I mentioned above.
This coin was in a roll of all the same date, mint and quality.

I don't think the head or the building have wear, I agree Oldephriam, I think it's simply a worn die.
This coin is hard for me to get an accurate photo of it.
I usually take OK photos...but this one is difficult because of how shinny it is.

I'll take this one to my next coin club meeting and see what the guys think.
Thats next week.
I'll keep you posted.

But please let me know your thoughts on Grade.
Just take a stab at it.

Thanks
Dan

Perhaps a bit of "cabinet friction", as they used to say. MS-63.

So I took this one to my coin meeting last week.
Passed it around, the old timers agreed with the old die polish and squeezing out a few more coins.
They also agreed they have seen ones like this around that time frame, it's noting unusual.
All in all a nice example of older die.
Low MS63 is about where most everyone placed it too.

Thanks again.
It's a keeper.
