From your link: "The Canadian $1 million gold coin is presently valued at $5.36 million (USD) and is the only such piece currently available on the market. The other four $1 million Canadian gold coins are privately held. It contains over $3.95 million of gold, according to the current gold spot price."
That's quite a premium over gold bullion value!
In 2007 when the $1million dollar gold coin was released, gold was about 1/2 the pice as it is today. Anyone know what RCMs original issue price was?

I saw it at the 2008 CNA convention in Ottawa. Two Mounties were 'guarding' it (like you could slip in your pocket and walk out). Wasn't really that impressed - maybe a coloured version would look better. Anyway, I figured I'll just buy it for 50% discount on Black Friday. I also heard (made up) that CC&C had lots of them and they definitely almost certainly probably commissioned the series.

I'm not sure a specific issue price was ever published. As the "coin" was a made-to-order release, its price likely varied with the spot price of gold at the time it was ordered. Based on the spot price of gold at the time the coin was announced, it had an intrinsic value of approximately $2.6 million CAD. As part of its contemporary publicity for the piece, the RCM said the coin would sell for between $2.5 and $3.0 million.

Part of the RCM's 1 for $1,000,000 series. We've been waiting for the next release for 9 years.

From that link. Quote:What is unclear is whether or not there would be any legal restrictions in actually using the coin as money for a hypothetical cash transaction. This matter recently received attention as the UK's Royal Mint apparently redefined the meaning of the term "legal tender" when it refused to redeem many of its silver and gold commemorative coins at face value and advised British banks to do the same.

Quote: I already have one and do not need a duplicate. No Problem. You may be able to buy this one tonne coin instead It has nearly 40 million worth of gold in it

if I remember correctly, the RCM was not actually going to make these, this was done as a display piece, part of the Olympics or something else I cant remember. They ended up getting multiple requests for the coin, and that is how they were sold.
