Whoops, I posted this by accident before I was finished typing the question....
I'm having a
VERY difficult time seeing the errors on brown, dark brown & worn cents.

Is it possible to see errors on these coins without using a microscope?

Most errors can be seen with the naked eye but die varieties typically need some level of magnification. A microscope is not required but you should at least have a good quality 7-10x magnifier with adjustable angle bright white lighting(gooseneck LED lamps work well).

Good advice. True errors are usually visible to the naked eye, but many types of die varieties are often obscured by wear (over mintmarks, for example).

I'm practically blind as a bat. Ok not really but to give you an idea I'm in my 30s & wear trifocals.

I'm using a 10x magnifier w/a light but not a gooseneck led. And the 10x isn't cutting it.

Any suggestions? I was looking on ebay & bc I'm fairly new at this (5 months) I'm not exactly sure which is the best for me, in my price range.

I'd sure appreciate any help that you'd like to give me.

I use el cheapo 40x plastic loupe with light 3 or $4 shipping included on Amazon or ebay and but 20 packs of battery at dollar store if lens gets yucky I chuck it and get new one

10 x high quality loupe will work also but you need good lens

you can also use $5-20 usb camera and view on screen or even tv connected to computer for me only major varieties pop in hand

As noted there are inexpensive solutions. I use a manified lamp to do my rough sort. Maybe 5" diameter. If I catch the light right and my eyes aren't too fatigued I can spot extra collumns on a 1994 or spot a 2004 Jefferson DDO. Anything finer like RPMs needs to go under the mic. I used to use a 30x jeweler's loop with led lighting but has its advantages and disadvantages. Eye fatigue was a problem.

Ocala - you are a genius! This is what I'll do until my new 40x loupe arrives!

With that being said everyone else's ideas are good ones too.

Thanks everyone!!

Keep in mind that a glass ocular is 100X better than a plastic ocular. Often on the inexpensive microscopes, they use a plastic lens. Sure you can see something with them, but often the color get altered with the plastic lens. So if you can get a 10X loupe, it is better than using too much power of lens. Most buyer won't by anything that they can't see with 10X loupe. With too much power of lens, then you are seeing strike movement/machine alterations on coins. They are not doubled die, but altered strike coins. If you note, not all doubled dies get listed. If they are too minor they are passed on as a 'minor' variety.

I have two 10x loupes now. One is silver & the other is well not a loop but a hand held small rectangular magnifier w/an led light that my local coin guy sold me. I can upload pics if you guys/gals want to see what I'm talking about.
I asked him about a microscope & he said that it was a personal preference but that he rarely used his & he didn't think that I needed one.
In the beginning (January) I had no idea what I needed.
I didn't realize that I was a blind as I am & wouldn't be able to see the fine details, especially on well worned coins.

I use a $30 Celestron usb. Microscope. I've taken off the plastic end and made a diffuser for the led lights cause when looking at proofs they gave to much reflection. But looking at work cents they are fine
