I just got about $1,750 from designing websites for businesses.  I like to donate 10% of what I make per week to church, & 25% to savings, so this equals $1137.50. I'm not sure if I'm going to use this money to invest in bullion (I'm waiting for silver to go down just a bit more), or coins. With $1000, I can get my entire Wheat cent collection filled, including a fairly nice 1909-S VDB . Or perhaps I'll get it all finished except the S VDB, & save some more for a great one. Another thing I was thinking is starting a full United States variety set (7070?) But I'm open to other ideas also. Anything yall recommend? *** Staff Edit - Let's stick to the coins *** |

I highly recommend the 7070 idea. But be warned it is not an easy set to complete But very fun.

I already have the 20th century set mostly done, so now it comes down to the older ones... I am also leaning twords the 7070 idea, & thank you for your advice.

I'm not a big fan of type sets. I did a 20th Century one a long time ago and sort of lost interest in them after that. I do like Albums. I'd suggest getting some Albums and just try to fill them. If you just start doing that I'd suggest Jefferson nickels and Lincoln Cents as starters. |

@Just Carl, I would also get bored of a 20th century type set. Get into the 19th century, though, that is where the fun coins are :P

 The Dansco 7070 is a 19th/20th century type set. Very enjoyable.  The only bad thing is trying to find a 7070 to buy.  |

Is this a weekly pay or a one time pay? If its weekly pick a set and buy the best of best. Quality holds its value, quantity doesn't. Pick a series and buy all the key dates first. Key date coins never seem to go down in price. If you wait til the end to buy the keys you could potentially spend many hundreds of dollars more than if you purchased them at the start.
If this is a one time pay. A thousand dollars isn't all that much and will quickly vanish. I've spent over a thousand on dinner for 4. I would personally buy one 200-300 dollar range coin and sit on the rest of the cash for a "just in case" scenario. You'll notice that as soon as you are low on cash amazing deals are everywhere.

It's weekly. And thank you for the advice about buying key dates first, I agree with you & wish I'd have known that a year ago.
