Here is an unusual Nero denarius I purchased a few weeks ago from CNG. I really liked the reverse on this coin. The standards remind of the legionary denarii of M Antony.

These denarii were struck near the end of Nero's reign.

Nero. AD 54-68. AR Denarius Rome mint. Struck AD 68.
(18 mm, 3.37 g)
Obv: IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P P, Laureate head right
Rev: Legionary eagle between two standards.
RIC I 68 (R2); RSC 356
Ex: CNG e-auction 370 lot 391 March 9, 2016.

The portrait gives the impression of a grimace, or even a snarl.

It would be interesting to find out if the reverse had to do with a specific legion and event. Very nice coin.

That is a nice example of a fairly scarce denarius. The Aquila and Standards type are not easy to find and as mostly quite well worn.

The type was struck towards the end of Nero's reign (probably AD 68), and was probably struck to appeal to the legions and affirm their fidelity to the emperor at a time when Nero was most in need of their support, facing severe opposition from Vindex, Otho and Galba.
Here is my example of this denarius. Like yours, it was struck on a tight planchet.

I'd describe the Emperor's expression on that second specimen as a scowl.

Nero was one of the more cruel, ruthless, and despotic of his ilk, and I think the artisans were subtly capturing these aspects of the person, perhaps with his even being approving of it.
