Charlton's catalogue narrows down the search for the specific Dr. Courteau
variety. Dr. Courteau identified some 24 different varieties of this series.
Dr. Courteau grouped his varieties according to the Die-Axis and the size of
the numeral 2. Charlton provided the collective varieties under their generic
grouping.

The coinage die-axis are found having narrow and large numeral 2's. The base
of the numeral spans 3 denticles on the narrow and 4 denticles and the large.

The token in question is of the narrow 2 grouping. Charlton notes this group
comprises Dr. Courteau varieties 237-241 inclusive. A copy of Dr. Courteau's
work is required to further distinguish which specific variety this is.

To wit...

239. Obv. The fig. 2 is recut at top and points to center of tooth. Generally
with die-cracks thro. first P and to r. point of ground, in some cases the former
is lacking.
Rev. Same as No. 338. Upset reverse R. 1.

338 Rev. Two blades point to r. rosette; the upper one is heavy, but its center
is not filled in, the left end of lower one is sharp and plain.

The above paragraphs are a exact quote of page 25 of Dr. Courteau's work.

Ergo, Dr. Courteau variety 239. Rariety 1 (common as mud). Sorry.

Grade a nice VF 30.

If it's Heaton, it should be coinage, the 2 looks like the wide 2 Royal Mint and should be medal alignment. Unless the Heaton mint also used large and wide die's. Or is it Royal Mint rotated die?
I'm sure Doug will have the answer here.

According to Charlton,
The Royal Mint struck Small, Large, and Wide 2's. (all medal die-axis).
The Heaton Mint struck Narrow and Large 2's. (all coinage die-axis).
Large 2's were struck by both mints.

p.s. Up/down is coinage
Up/up is medal.
