So, what do you call these in English?

What-Do-You-Call-The-Letters-In-Front-Of-A-Serial-Number-In-English?

In Polish, this is a "series". It's already called that on notes dating from 1830 and while not every note has this word spelled out, it is often found until 1947 (and then on a 1948 specimen note).

But in English, if you say "series" it seems to be understood as "a set of related notes".

Nowadays, you can sometimes find those being called "prefixes" in Polish. This is a recent development and must have come from English. Is that the correct term, then?

And if the letters pictured above are a prefix, then what are "block numbers" or "block letters"?

Yes, prefix is what I've always heard them called.

Prefix, or block. A Series is essentially the same thing, just a different way of adding letters to the numbering to allow more notes using only a set amount of numbers.

They are called Prefix because they come before the number. Suffix if they come at the end of the number.

You have a China 5 Jiao these notes have different Prefix types. Letter-Letter, Letter-Number-Letter.
