Hello there!
So I have a recent assignment from my family as we sort through an estate. I know nothing about coins but have the task of sorting out the coin "collection". The problem being that everything is all mixed together: Proof sets, jars of wheat pennies, jars of loose change, tins full of half dollars, uncirculated coin sets, commemorative coins and jars of nickels. Unfortunately I got started sorting and now I'm just a little hooked on trying to see what I can find. And trying to balance what's worth my time and what's not. And then figuring out what to do with it all in the end. I've found some tips in the posts that are already here and thank you all in advance for answering the questions I have yet to ask.

Welcome, I too and a newbie and inherited a coin and currency collection that I have been working through. It has been fun, challenging and time consuming. These websites are great for helping. Also I have two "apps" on my Ipad that help me evaluate and price coins...'Photograde' provides high definition pictures of coins in varying grades, so you can see what a great coin vs. one that is worn looks like. I also use CoinBook Pro to give me a price guideline that is up to date on coins. I have The Official Blue Book, Handbook of United States coins, I do not use it for pricing but it shows how many on each year were minted, it tells you what to look for on a coin as far as wear. Etc. etc. a good reference, but not that good for pricing compared to looking at actual sold coins on the internet..I also have a book "The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for US coins....obviously it show how they grade coins and is another good resource book And I am beginner....the old timers on here will probably give you much better information....but since I am here I thought I'd share my thoughts...if you have any currency in the collection let me know and I will give you more on that.... Good Luck, hope you find some hidden treasures.....

You came to the right place! You have been assigned a very tedious task indeed and I am sure many people will chime in and agree with me that you just hit the "coin lottery"! Congrats! Well for starters I would sort everything by denomination then by series. For example half dollars then Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin, Kennedy, etc. Do the same for silver dollars, quarters, dimes, pennies. Then do some research on the valuable dates "key dates" and semi-valuable dates "semi-key dates" for each series. Then look through what you have to find those valuable coins. Also note besides dates there are errors and varieties. Pull aside any coin that looks "weird" or unusual to the naked eye. Lastly, we can't get enough pictures send as many as possible and we will help. No question is "stupid" please ask as many as possible! Good luck and enjoy the hunt!

We can certainly help with any questions. Make sure to post individual topics in the right forums for each coin or group of coins. That will ensure the right people see them. Also, have fun!
