I would appreciate opinions on this $5 gold coin. I have some ebay bucks to spend and have decided they should go for the gold. I have no actual experience in determining classic US gold is genuine or not. Hence, I turn to you fine forum folk for advice. Thanks! YB

Worst counterfeit 1908-S ever. They got the date wrong.

I have no idea why I put 1908 when it is obviously 1914.

I do not have the coin in hand as it is up for bid on ebay. Normally, I would not be looking for gold on ebay, unless it was from one of the big bullion outfits such as Silvertowne, but I do have a fair amount of ebay bucks to spend before May 2nd, and do want to get some gold for it.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment.

You might want to consider just pasting the URL (link) below for this coin on ebay.

We all can them opine without you having to worry about taking any photos etc.

Ok, here is the link:

I will probably end up buying a 1/4 oz gold eagle from one of the big bullion dealers on ebay, but I do appreciate all opinions and comments from everyone.

It looks fine to me but you can usually find such pieces in certified holders for about the same money and if you're strictly making a bullion play they are cheaper dates too.

Thanks everyone, the price of this rose past the point of my interest in this, so I spent my ebay bucks on a 10 oz silver bar.

I think that it is genuine, but it has a lot of marks and may have been lightly polished. The grade probably nets down to low to mid EF.
