I've never cleaned any of my coins, and I've had some over 15 years. Others found or have been given to me over time...I heard its hard and will take away future value unless it's done perfectly....any thoughts out there? I am open to any ideas or suggestions...thanks

James,

Firstly, to CCF.

Here's a good place to start:

why is it bad to clean coins?

Finally, for more ideas and warnings just type. 'cleaning coins' in the top left Search Box entitled, 'Search Coin Community'.

Good luck & proceed with caution.

to CCF. Very good question.

Here are my simple two thoughts on cleaning, which I have stated in other threads:

Quote:
Rule #1: never clean your coins.
Rule #2: If you aren't sure what to do, see rule #1.

Almost without exception, cleaning of coins by the novice or casual collector is a bad idea.

I have tried cleaning a few coins that had issues. But I did it mostly to learn what the differences are, and if I can tell a coin has been cleaned. At coin shows I really struggle to tell the difference, hoping this is a low cost learning experience.

I cleaned these totally scary 40-50s era dimes in an acetone bath after offering them to two LCS. I figured they were ugly bullion by that point.

Edit: had they no been stored in a metal box that crudded them up, I would have left them alone. Or had the LCS offered anything above melt.
