These are all 60x, and most have undergone postprocessing to clarify the image. I'm not particularly happy with the quality of my QX5 images, but I'm a little spoiled.

Thanks for the pictures!

Does it come with a good light source attached? Or can you use a lamp?

The pics with the bluish tone were taken using the onboard lighting and QX5 software, and the monochrome pics were done with external lighting and Scanners And Cameras in Control Panel.

Well my dilemma is that I'd like to get a microscope for looking at coins and one to take pictures of them. If I got a microscope to look at them as well as taking pictures Id need a trinocular if I'm not mistaken. The trinocular ones ive seen are very expensive. Ive also seen regular binocular ones for about 160 bucks plus the QX5 for 90 bucks. I think this would be cheaper than a trinocular one, but I don't really know anything about microscopes.

Well, optics is very much a place where you get what you pay for. As you can see, acceptable results are very possible with a QX5, but they're difficult to achieve. The focusing mechanism is very coarse, and the platform upon which you set the coin isn't particularly stable.

On the bright side, it inputs directly into the PC, and if you're comfortable with postprocessing software you can do pretty well. For the money, I guess I'd recommend it, especially when the price of truly good equipment for this purpose is so dear.

With your camera setup can you get comparable pictures with the QX5?

No. I haven't yet found the absolute limit to my setup, but this is close to it:

Me? Haven't turned it on in months. Having said that, I haven't had a coin which warranted such attention, really, since I liquidated my 1921's. Now that I know how to compensate for its' shortcomings, I'll definitely haul it out the next time I need detail that close.

OMG! I just remembered I own a classic American Optics microscope w/ a Trinocular head!

Time to break that bad boy out and look at some coins!

I have the trinoc camera adapter for my Older Nikon Coolpix 990 too.

It does, 3.5x, 10x, 43x & 97x

My first image using the AO Microscope and Nikon Coolpix 990.

Mild unsharp mask and cool photo filter using photoshop.

This is at the lowest magnification this microscope will do. Have to use eyepiece projection technique. Used the 3.5x Primary Lens and 10x eyepiece for 35x. Camera attached to trinoc head using manual focus and aperture priority mode @ f11 with a 1 second exposure. Self timer used to prevent camera shake.

That's gorgeous, MarkJ. Obviously the magnification is going to limit you to very small fields of view, but the optics are up to whatever you wish. Since you're comfortable with the software, let me recommend that you download and try the Gimp, if you haven't. I like Photoshop's color correction better, but for me the Gimp slaps Photoshop around in the filtering processes - I like the Gimp's Sharpening and Blur as being much more granular and adjustable. I can apply 30%-40% of plain Sharp in the Gimp and achieve nice clear results without pixelation.

Give it a shot, and let me know what you think.

Thanks SuperDave. I think I will try locate a 5x eyepiece to see if I can get a wider field.

I do use Gimp. In fact, it's the only program I use on my MacBook Pro for graphic manipulation.

I just happen to have Photoshop always running on my main workstation. When you pay that much for something you must use it!

Hello
Really, the photos of details are very good.

They allow to make a study numismatic of great quality.

The doubt that I have is the following one:
This microscope QX5, can make photos of a complete coin?
What is the maximum size of object to photograph?

I do not know if a great coin as Half dollar can be photographed.
The idea that I have is to make a composition of several photos, with the central image of the coin and extensions of the characteristic details.
Joining the details with the main photo by means of arrows, a clear presentation is obtained.

Thanks Joan
