Wanted to get an opinion on this CRH Lincoln.
I am trying to figure out/understand the difference between an AU and BU coins, even if they look similar.
How would you be able to tell, and what would make you grade it a BU over AU?

BadThad and daviscfad:
what specifics made you grade this coin?
I am curious to see what others are looking for, to help me see overall grading on coins as I find them
Rest in Peace

If you want to learn grading yourself, take a handful of the same type coins, whatever you may have.

I suggest Jefferson nickels, simply because you can find some older and more circulated examples still in circulation.

Examine each coin with a magnifier. Know what are considering the "high points" of the design.

Lie up the WORST condition on the left and the BEST condition on the right.

Keep sorting the coins until you are fairly sure that each coin in the row is where it should be.

You will have learned a tremendous amount by doing this type of sorting for any type of coin.

Lots of hit and white water stains in the fields. To hit the higher grades the fields must be clean and free of distractions.

IMO, one good way to learn is to spend a lot of time on the PCGS website. Click on the price guide, go to the modern Lincolns section and browse the photos give for each year.

i agree with thad rainman.. I also spend time on heritage auction looking at coins.. the picture maybe showing things that arent there in person.. I seem to overgrade by a point a lot of times.. so I i think its a 64 I go with 63.. I consistently come a point high on lincolns and ikes.. Also I am not crazy about the photograde app PCGS has.. Most of the time if the fields are clean, its atleast a 65.. if it has spots it goes no further usually.. marks and overall eye appeal make me think its a 63.. thad along with others are a lot better than this than me though..
