Ouch, it's a mistake all right, but not by the mint. A layer was scraped off, yet I'm surprised that the layer still seems to be there, at least partially. That may be the missing part of the nine below! There's also interesting damage on the NW rim, manifesting in denticle-like features. Thanks for sharing.

So, none of the damage on this coin was caused during the minting process?

It was done after it was struck. Note the movement of the metal on to the south. PSD

From the patina, the damage appears old, but I can't think of any minting process that would cause that type of trauma. PSD, but interesting.

I would think the part being questioned is the "edge reeding" effect that is on the obverse of a Lincoln Cent, not the chiseled trench about the date/mint-mark?
I am guessing that is what Brewsir thought would be evident. How would that part be explained?

That can be explained by being in a pendant/jewelry piece. The scraping is pretty ugly too. PMD all the way
