Not sure if this is allowed. I need a little advice. I have been looking for a Trade dollar in an attempt to get at least one of every kind of US Silver dollars. I found this one when I was browsing on ebay and am thinking it could be a great deal. Am I missing something or over grading it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/15203744424...RK:MEBIDX:ITLooks AU55 min to me. What do you think? Has it been cleaned? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Looks AU details cleaned to me . I am by far no expert on Trade dollars but the 1877 S is by far the highest mintage of over 12 million. I actually had a teacher show me one Tuesday she inherited while I was substitute teaching she had no clue, but I did inform her due to condition issues and uncertainty I didn't know if it was real cause they were highly counterfeited.

Is the mottled appearance the clue to possible cleaning?

I can't tell anything about the surfaces with certainty from those pictures.

That's not mottling, that's carbon staining and yes, it is from cleaning. You should peruse local coin shows and shops and keep looking. If you're anxious and this is your price range, you're better off with this coin http://www.ebay.com/itm/1877-S-Trad...AOSwsN9XCDSX

I, personally, am cautious of pictures that are posted with little care to show the item properly. Why sideways? Is there something that they want to distract you from? That being said, the seller does have decent amount of feedback with 100% , many from coin sales.

Quote: you can always bust it out of its slab, if you buy slabbed at least you know its real This is true, however I wont break open a slab from the top 3 TPGs. If someone went to the trouble of sending it in then I believe it deserves to stay in that slab. Only to be removed by TPG for regrading purposes. This is my own personal rule. Kind of strange I know. It is a beautiful coin(PCGS one). When I get really ready to buy I will check CCF(sales and ebay) first. A lot more confident when buying unslabbed coins looking at those listings anyways. This one just caught my eye for the wear or lack of it.

Precisely!! Why is this thing shown with the photo turned at a 90 degree angle? Is it that hard to rotate the photo, or is he out to hide something? Here is a piece of advice you can take to the bank. If you have average or below average skills as a collector NEVER buy a raw Trade dollar. In fact you need to spend a lot of time looking at pieces in holders because fake Trade dollars in fake holders are not beyond the realm of possibility. There are many, many counterfeit Trade dollars. This is a coin that the Chinese love to counterfeit. My advice is buy it certified from a dealer you trust, and don't mess around with raw Trade dollars on ebay. Do yourself a favor and pay the price if you want one of these coins. The "bargains" are more often than not fakes.

You should be less concerned about the display and more concerned about getting stuck with a counterfeit. Trade dollars are dangerous in that regard. Almost all of my collection is in slaps in bank safe deposit boxes. The "display" is in my brain. After a while you reach that point as a collector.

Good to keep in mind about the counterfeiting of these. I do keep most of my collection in a fire proof built in safe. I live in the middle of nowhere Montana. The only thing I worry about breaking in is Grizzly bears. As for making displays. This is a Hobby. With a wood shop like mine you would too. I intend to make out of Oak slabs I inherited from father. Currently working on a Locking coin Chest with lined drawers with a built in(lit) display area for coins in top. Has a hinged Plexiglass top. Made out of reclaimed Barn wood. Like I said this is a hobby to kill the cabin fever that come with Montana winters.
