Hello, Everyone,

It's great to be here and thank you for letting me on board :)

From jump.... I know nothing about coins, so please forgive my terms and nomenclature. Purchased from a coin dealer and bequeathed, I have a 1971 IKE, gold clad with a strange error on the reverse rim. I cannot (for the life of me) determine the category of this error.

On Reverse, it appears to be a rough texture with hills and valleys directly on the rim. On the bottom half of the coin the "material" actually overlaps the field and 'One Dollar'. The truly odd thing is that the little mountainous material also contains some of the gold clad, reeded edge design.

To my completely untrained eye it all looks like not only a mechanical error but also some kind of metallurgical mishap. Does this ever happen?

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to look and sharing any thoughts you may have.

My Best Wishes for a healthy and Prosperous Spring .... Art D.

Unfortunately, it is all damage. It appears that your coin was electroplated with gold and then soldered into a belt buckle and subsequently removed. You can confirm by weighing the coin, it will be heavier than a normal unmolested Ike.

Thank you, ANA. Hence the lack of information on the net about this kind of error! Be well :) Art D. And thank you for the speedy observation!

The ANA in my signature line refers to the American Numismatic Association, the world's largest coin collector organization. With you being a lampguy, you might find it interesting that the logo for the ANA is known as "the lamp of knowledge".
